The new exhibition in the glass pavilion at the Louvre-Lens portrays the Metamorphoses of Ovid, a tremendous source of inspiration for artists since ancient times.

Written at the beginning of the Common Era, the Metamorphoses is a long epic poem in which Ovid chronicles the history of the Greco-Roman world from its creation to the era of Emperor Augustus, his contemporary. Through amazing tales of transformation of gods, heroes, or mere mortals, he describes the beauty of nature and the geography of the Mediterranean world.

Some thirty artworks from different museums of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, including first-century bronzes, paintings by Van Dyck and Delacroix, sculptures by Carpeaux and Rodin, as well as furniture, decorative objects, and even a book illustrated by Picasso, have been brought together by Bruno Gaudichon, head curator at La Piscine in Roubaix. All offer fascinating insight into the world of the beautiful Narcissus, the dark Medea, and the intrepid Icarus, among others.

Organized by:

Bruno Gaudichon, Musée La Piscine in Roubaix, and Luc Piralla, Musée du Louvre-Lens.
